Members of the Israel Precious Stones and Diamonds Exchange were among the more than 300 members of the Israeli diamond and gemstone sector who joined dealers from Antwerp and the United States, February 8 to 12, for the 2015 Winter edition of the International Diamond Week. Hosted by the Israel Diamond Exchange, the event also included members of the Diamond Dealers Club of New York and the Antwerp Diamond Bourse of Belgium.
For the five days of the week, the giant trading floor of the Israel Diamond Exchange was transformed into a virtual trade show area, with each exhibiting company presenting itself and its merchandise. Delegations of buyers flew in from a number of countries, including the United States, Russia and Turkey.
The guest of honor at the official opening ceremony was the U.S. ambassador to Israel, Dan Shapiro, who in his address stressed the close economic ties between Israel and his country, which he said was underscored by the 100 American buyers at the event.
The presence so many buyers from the United States is a good sign of things to come, the ambassador stated. ”The global economic crisis has affected all industries and most countries around the world, but we are pulling through,” Shapiro stated. “An economic recovery is now underway in the U.S., which will hopefully lead the way to a global economic recovery. This year should be a comeback year for the global economy, and for the diamond industry.”
Joining Shmuel Schnitzer, the Israel Diamond Exchange president, the host of the International Diamond Week, at the opening ceremony was a host of industry leaders, including Ernest Blom, president of the World Federation of Diamond Bourses; Gaetano Cavalieri, president of CIBJO, the World Jewelry Confederation; Reuven Kaufman, president of the Diamond Dealers Club of New York; Marcel Pruwer, president of the Antwerp Diamond Bourse; and Shlomo Eshed, president of the Israel Precious Stones and Diamonds Exchange.
The International Diamond Week was highlighted by a number of side events, including a Diam-Tech exhibition, in which the Israeli diamond technology and software was presented; a lecture about ‘The World of Fancy Color Diamonds’ by Leibish Polnauer, and a presentation of the World Jewelry Hub and Panama Diamond Exchange, which is currently being developed as the key diamond, colored gemstone and jewelry trading center in Latin America.
